Statistics from Canadian Centre of Justice rate Edmonton low (9 out of 33) in Crime Severity in 2011

In spite of the high number of homicides in 2011, Edmonton faired well against other centers throughout Canada in crime severity.

The Crime Severity Index assigns a weight to an offence. Offences like homicides and robbery are given a higher weight than mischief offences. According to Statistics Canada results that were officially released today, Edmonton received an overall Crime Severity Index of nine; violent crime was six and non-violent crime was nine.

Edmonton is ranked among all 33 CMA’s (Census metropolitan areas) with one being the highest and 33 being the lowest.

Police services in the Edmonton CMA include Stony Plain, Strathcona, Morinville, Devon, Fort Saskatchewan, St. Albert, among others.
