Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention

ENW offers a Senior Safety & Fraud Prevention program, delivered as a 90-minute workshop that covers street, home, transportation, and cyber safety. We also train senior volunteers (“Train the Trainer”) to lead sessions in their community. To book a presentation for your group or organization, contact the ENW office.

The Senior Safety & Fraud Prevention Program is designed to help seniors stay informed, alert, and connected. Seniors are often targeted by scams, unsafe home practices, or cybercrimes that exploit trust and technology gaps. ENW’s initiative provides education and resources to prevent these incidents and promote independence and well-being. The presentation covers 4 key areas of safety. Street Safety, Home Safety, Transportation Safety and Online Safety/Cybersecurity

Street Safety

Be aware of your surroundings when walking or taking public transit.

  • Before going out on the street, plan the safety route, note nearby police/fire stations and plan to walk in pairs or a group
  • While on the street, stay alert and cross the road if you’re followed. Stay in populated and well-lit areas and keep your loads light
  • Carry a phone or whistle for emergencies.
  • Avoid sharing your route or schedule with strangers.
  • Don’t be a hero! Property and possessions can be replaced. You cannot!
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to EPS

Home Safety

  • Install deadlocks to secure your door and windows.
  • Also install wide-angle door viewers to scout who’s knocking on your door without opening it.
  • Use peepholes or cameras before opening your door.
  • Do not share personal information with unknown callers or visitors.
  • Consider installing motion lights and alarm systems
  • When living in a seniors complex, never allow strangers (e.g. delivery people or other unknown individuals) come in behind you through the front entrance. It is not rude it is safe
  • Trim all shrubs to eliminate hiding spots. Everyone loves their shrubbery, but if left unattended, they can block proper visibility or attract intruders

Transportation Safety

Plan trips ahead and share details with family or trusted friends.

  • Do not offer lifts to strangers. Instead, call 911 when you see a stranger in distress.
  • Have keys in hand when approaching your vehicle
  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash and keep all valuables out of site
  • Maintain visibility when entering or exiting parking lots.
  • Don’t drive home if you think you are being followed
  • When getting on the bus, wait for the bus to kneel and while on the bus, sit in the safe priority area designated for seniors near the driver. Also remember to use handrails when moving around.
  • Speak with transit officers or call/text 780.442.4900 if you feel unsafe on ETS
