Addressing Homelessness in Edmonton: A Call for Action

Addressing Homelessness in Edmonton: A Call for Action

Homelessness is a complex issue, often misinterpreted as a problem that can be solved solely by targeting individuals. However, as research has shown, homelessness is deeply rooted in housing availability, affordability, and broader socio-economic factors.

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi’s recent op-ed in the Edmonton Journal stresses the importance of strong city services in addressing this crisis. With the rising cost of housing and limited affordable options, Edmonton is facing increasing homelessness, from unsheltered individuals to those in provisional housing situations. In fact, recent data from Homeward Trust Edmonton reveals a dramatic rise in homelessness, with unsheltered individuals increasing by 50% from January to July 2024.

The key issue? Rising rents and dwindling vacancies. Across North America, regions with affordable housing have lower homelessness rates, while areas like Edmonton, with high rent and low vacancy, struggle to keep up. As housing becomes more expensive, the pressure on shelters, the justice system, and healthcare intensifies.

Edmonton’s Growth = More Homelessness Without Action

Edmonton’s rapid growth, combined with a shortage of affordable housing, has the potential to worsen the homelessness crisis unless immediate steps are taken. The city’s development must prioritize affordable housing solutions to keep pace with the rising demand.

What can be done? As a community, we need to advocate for policies that ensure affordable housing becomes a reality for all residents. Mayor Sohi suggests turning surplus school sites into affordable housing as part of a broader strategy to alleviate housing pressures.

It’s Time for Change

Homelessness is not just a societal issue—it’s a housing issue. Solutions must focus on increasing affordable housing stock, stabilizing rent, and ensuring better accessibility to services. As we move forward, Edmonton has the opportunity to lead the way in creating a future where everyone has a safe place to call home.
