Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch Recognizes Fire Prevention Week: October 6–12, 2024

October 6 - October 12

Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch is excited to join communities across the country, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services in recognizing Fire Prevention Week from October 6–12, 2024. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home—because they can truly save lives.

Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has raised awareness about fire safety across North America. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it a national observance, making it the longest-running public health campaign in the United States. Firefighters and safety advocates use this week to educate the public on reducing fire risks and making communities safer.

Why Fire Prevention Matters

During a fire, every second counts. A quick response can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Working smoke alarms provide early warnings that allow people valuable time to evacuate. Fire safety education is crucial not just for children, but for teenagers, adults, and seniors, who are also at risk.

Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time for families and individuals in Edmonton to review fire safety practices. Ensure that your smoke alarms are installed, tested regularly, and replaced when necessary.

Key Actions for Fire Safety:

  • INSTALL smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
  • TEST your smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re functioning properly.
  • REPLACE your smoke alarms every 10 years, or as soon as they stop working.

This year, the NFPA is providing a wealth of resources, including apps, videos, and printables, to help you stay informed and safe. Let’s work together to reduce fire risks and protect our community.
