If you’re trick-or-treating with friends or family tonight, here are a couple precautions you can take to keep yourself safe.
Choose the right costume. Choose costumes and accessories that are less likely to catch on fire, such as those made of nylon or heavyweight polyester.
Stay visible. Give each child a flashlight, and choose brightly coloured costumes to make them more visible to motorists and others. Set a curfew for children and check in regularly.
Be careful with candy and toys. Have a parent or adult look over treats before children eat them. Look out for torn, tampered, discoloured packaging.
Avoid danger when decorating. Check decorative lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Do not overload extension cords.
