Honoring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, 2024, Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch (ENW) joins all Canadians in reflecting on the enduring impact of colonialism and honoring the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities. This day is dedicated to acknowledging the historical injustices of residential schools, recognizing the pain endured, and committing to the path of reconciliation.

Our Commitment

At ENW, we understand the importance of reconciliation in fostering a truly inclusive and respectful community. As we observe this day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Indigenous voices, engaging in meaningful dialogue, and promoting understanding within our neighborhoods.

How You Can Contribute

  1. Wear Orange: Show your support and solidarity by wearing an orange shirt on September 30. The orange shirt symbolizes the impact of residential schools and represents a commitment to honoring the experiences of survivors and their families.
  2. Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Explore resources such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report and other educational materials to deepen your understanding.
  3. Support Indigenous Initiatives: Participate in or support local events and activities that honor this day. You can do this by attending ceremonies, supporting Indigenous artists, or engaging in community discussions. Your involvement helps foster reconciliation.
  4. Listen and Learn: Engage with Indigenous leaders and community members to hear their stories and perspectives. Listening to and amplifying Indigenous voices is essential to our collective journey toward healing.
  5. Commit to Action: Reflect on how you can contribute to reconciliation in your daily life. Actions such as learning about Indigenous cultures, advocating for Indigenous rights, and promoting inclusivity in your community can make a meaningful impact.

Join us in observing this important day. Let us come together to honor the past, support the present, and build a future rooted in respect and understanding.

At ENW, we are dedicated to fostering a safer and more inclusive community for everyone, and we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in this important work.
