International Fraud Awareness Week 2024

International Fraud Awareness Week 2024

This global event underscores the need for every community member to stay informed, recognize, and report fraud to protect our communities.
The Growing Impact of Fraud in Canada

In Canada, fraud has become a pressing issue. As of June 2024, there have been 21,604 reports processed, with 15,941 victims and $284 million lost to fraud, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). Although some funds are recovered each year, prevention is our strongest defense.

Why Reporting Fraud and Cybercrime Matters

Reporting fraud and cybercrime is crucial for community safety and supports law enforcement in effectively combating these crimes. When you report to your local police and the CAFC, you help protect others and contribute to a safer community.

Key Reasons to Report to the CAFC:

  • Linking Crime Patterns: Reporting helps identify links between cases across Canada and internationally, creating a clearer picture of criminal networks.
  • Supporting Investigations: Each report adds valuable information that could help law enforcement complete or advance investigations.
  • Understanding Crime Trends: CAFC reports reveal trends, enabling law enforcement to predict and respond to emerging fraud risks.
  • Boosting Prevention Efforts: Information collected by the CAFC assists public and private sectors, academia, and community groups in developing effective prevention and awareness programs.

Your report can make a difference in keeping our neighbourhoods safer. Together, let’s strengthen our community’s resilience against fraud. Join us this week and help protect our community for a secure future.
