Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention

Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention

Overview of the Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention

  • ENW engaged with seniors in Edmonton to determine their safety concerns and experiences. Surveys were developed, distributed to various groups and individuals and shared at community events. The gathered data were analyzed to create physical and digital resource materials addressing safety concerns of Edmontonian seniors.
  • We delivered several workshops, meetings, and recently introduced the “Train the Trainer” component which has received positive feedback.
  • “Train the Trainer” involved selecting seniors from various organizations to become Trainers, focusing on personal safety, property safety, and cybersecurity (including fraud prevention).
  • Feedback from participants guided the personalization of the “Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention Program” Presentation for each organization, ensuring alignment with their needs. ENW will continue to offer support, being accessible when needed, and attending organizations to assist with workshops and regular meetings.

Benefits for Seniors

  • The presentation can be readily utilized for program development, orientation/on-boarding, board member meetings, and interactions with new members enabling widespread education on senior’s safety and fraud prevention.
  • The organizations, through their Trainers, can provide education on senior safety topics.
  • ENW will continue supporting organizations in disseminating crime prevention information for seniors, with the Train the Trainer program reducing the need for recurring meetings with ENW.

Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention Workshop

The ENW Senior Safety and Fraud Prevention Workshop is a 90 Minute workshop facilitated by the ENW Program Coordinator and delivered to groups of seniors based on request.

Seniors are exploited because they are sometimes considered easy targets. This is because of their lack of technological know-how, Access to funds, loneliness, declining mental awareness, willingness to help and their high levels of trust.

The goal of the presentation is to increase their awareness, and get them prepared to become hard targets.

The presentation comprises of a mix of text, videos, scenario based questions, key take aways and useful contacts for further enquires and effective crime reporting. It covers 4 (four) major areas of safety

1.) Street Safety

2.) Home Safety

3.) Transportation Safety

4.) Cybersecurity
